On June 7th, 2010, Apple announced the latest version of its iPhone as well as an updated operating system for both the new and older iPhones. Not only does the new device have an updated look, but it has some nifty features that should be especially interesting to business travelers.

Folders

Apple

The new iPhone (and updated iPhone software for existing users) will include folders for the first time. The folders allow users to categorize applications or icons and put them into folders to keep the screen real estate cleaner and easier to navigate.

Better email

The new phone includes a unified email system that not only supports a wide range of email providers (including Gmail, Yahoo! Mail, AOL, and more), but allows you to switch easily between them. Businesses will appreciate the phone’s support for Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync accounts. You can now view your emails by thread, which makes sorting through and organizing them much easier.

Multitasking

The iPhone includes a much faster processor (the same one that's in the iPad) as well as upgrades to the operating system that allow users to run more than one application at a time. That should be especially helpful for communication applications like need to function in the background, such as Internet phone (VoIP) applications or GPS applications.

Tethering

The new iPhone also supports tethering, which allows users to share the phone's 3G connection with notebook computers or Internet-enabled devices to create a Wi-Fi hotspot. Even when tethered, the phone will still work as a phone. Be aware, however, that you may need a different data plan from your service provider in order to use tethering.

Spell check

The new iPhone operating system also has a built-in spell check that works in multiple applications (including Mail, Notes, and more).

External keyboard (FINALLY!)

Sometimes when I'm a trip I need to be able to take notes and write, but I don't really need to do much editing. Now I can possibly do that with an iPhone and leave my netbook at home. The iPhone now supports an external keyboard via Bluetooth, which means it will be possible to actually write long documents on the device instead of using the hunt-and-peck on-screen keyboard. Yeah!
