  • Excellent rewards program

Cons

  • Expensive - $450 annual fee
  • $175 annual fee for additional cards
  • Can't carry over balances

Description

  • Credit card with accompanying rewards program that lets you earn points for dollars spent.
  • No pre-set spending limit.
  • Membership fee of $450; $175 for additional cards

Guide Review - American Express Platinum Card for Business Travel

Signing Up: From the American Express website, applying for a card is simple - but getting one will require a solid credit history. Once accepted into the program, your first statement will include the $450 annual fee (plus $175 for each additional card requested).

For the business traveler, the Platinum Card offers numerous benefits (some exclusive), including:

  • Free access to numerous airport lounges, including those operated by American Airlines, Continental, Delta and NWA.
  • Ability to manage your account online, with downloading options for tracking business expenses. Additional customized statement tagging available to separate business from non-business expenses, making expense reports a cinch.
  • Access to 24 hour/day concierge service when you need help (dining reservations, flight changes, etc.) on the road.
  • Four times each calendar year, members can use free companion tickets for travel.
  • Free travel protection
Rewards Program: Platinum Card holders are automatically part of the American Express Rewards program, with its own additional benefits.

The one downside to the Platinum Card (in addition to the high fees) is that balances cannot be carried over. For those who have to turn in expense reports to get reimbursed, you may find yourself fronting hefty charges each month while you wait for expense reports to clear.

Any shortcomings of the card, however, will be more than made up for in free companion tickets, airport lounge access, travel protection and other perks, particularly if someone else is picking up your annual fee.

Not the same AMEX as they used to be, Member Stobals

I had been an AMEX member for decades until recently. Over the past few years the service and benefits from AMEX has crashed and burned. Now that they issue cards to just about anyone who applies for them, they treat their members like potential criminals. For years I never had an issue. Suddenly, and for no reason, they started demanding copies of tax returns. Then they added a limit to my so called ""no-limit"" card and would fluctuate that limit every day so much that I never really knew if my card was usable or not. They also put so many restrictions on the benefits that they all became pretty much useless. I used to look at my AMEX card as a asset. After all the benefit restrictions were added, and the anti-fraud measures that were hurled at me, I started to see that this card was actually a huge liability so I canceled it. After looking for alternatives, I found that I could get all the same benefits, or better, from a combination of other cards but with no annual fees and with no stupid little games being played.
