Holiday Business Travel: Planning a Business Trip During the Holidays

Business Travel in the Holiday Season

From About.com

Have you ever seen the movie Planes, Trains & Automobiles? In the movie, Steve Martin's character endures several trying ordeals as he makes his way home for the holidays after a business trip. The movie underscores a very basic and real theme . . . that business travel during the holidays is hard.

With the holiday season fast approaching, it is important to plan your business travel now. Here are a couple of tips to help in planning your business trip during the holiday season.

  • Plan Ahead

If you know that a trip is coming up in the next few weeks, start planning it out now. Many cities do quite a bit of holiday traffic, and you will find that booking airlines and hotels becomes more costly and difficult as the season approaches. Plan out your travel schedule through the beginning of the year, and you will have a good overview of upcoming trips and meetings.

  • Book Flights and Hotels Early

Being organized is essential to surviving holiday business travel. Once you have an overview of your upcoming trips, you can start booking your flights and hotels. Booking early is key to securing an accomodation that works best for you. If you find yourself stuck planning a last-minute trip, you may need to book connecting flights to keep your cost down. In addition, hotels may be full and you will need to widen your search by either paying more or staying in less business friendly accomodations. Planning ahead can guarantee a hotel that is geared for business travelers.

  • Pack Light

Airports are treacherous during the holidays. Packing light can help you navigate the airport more quickly, and get you to your destination that much faster. Be sure to review the TSA guidelines for travelers before arriving at the airport.

These are just a few suggestions that will help you plan your business travel during the holiday season. Staying efficient will not only help you be more effective on the road, but it will also help you to retain your holiday spirit!
