What Not to Do on Business Trips

Things to Avoid During Business Travel

From About.com

Business travelers cover a lot of ground and spend a lot of energy doing so. They often exhaust themselves while on the road, and as such, may not always make the best judgment calls. Poor judgment can lead to some serious business travel no-nos. Here are just a few things that you should be sure to avoid when you travel for business:
  • Lose Temper on Airline: You're crammed in a tiny seat with Talky McChatty next to you, and Junior Kickyfeet behind you. You think you'll escape by watching the onboard viewing options, but your headphones are getting poor reception. Are you justified in losing your temper? Sure. Should you let it blow? Absolutely not.

Losing your temper on a flight will not solve your problem. In fact, being rude to a flight attendant can have you ejected from the plane (before you take off, of course), or arrested upon landing. After 9/11, flight attendants got a lot more leverage in making sure that flights are safe. If they feel you are threatening them by losing your temper, you could kiss that flight goodbye. So stay cool, and order another drink. You might need it.

  • Drink Like You're Out on the Town: Alcohol is the ultimate social lubricant. It helps people loosen up and relax. A relaxed client is a good thing. A soused client is not so good. A soused you is even worse.

Limit your drinks to one every hour or just one for the evening. Your body can metabolize a beer or something light every hour, enabling you to stay on top of your game. It's probably even better advice to avoid the alcohol and go with a tonic and water. That way, you can let your clients loosen up and you can stay in charge of the evening.

  • Go Walk Around a New City by Yourself: You're new in town, and you've never seen Manhattan before. You'd like to take a walk and check out the sights, but you don't really know where to go. You may look out of the hotel lobby and see a lot of people walking around and feel safe. Should you still go by yourself?

The most important thing to remember is that you don't know this city and you are not sure where to go. Take the time to talk with the concierge who can give you a general sense of the area and tell you places you may want to avoid. In a new city, information is your protection, so get plenty of it.

  • Don't Charge Movies to Your Expense Account: Despite the therapeutic effect of watching a movie before going to bed, you still can't label it as a business expense. If you use your company credit card to pay for incidentals (like computer usage), make sure you pay cash or personal credit card for any movies you charge.

These are just a few things that business travelers should avoid during business trips. Some of these might seem obvious, but you'd be surprised. Business travelers need sound judgment at every step of their trip. Avoiding the actions above will help you to remain a consummate professional.
