Charleston is a wonderful city. It's got Southern charm, great restaurants, interesting shopping, art galleries, and a beautiful downtown area. For business travelers that want to be in the middle of it all, while still having a cozy place to retreat to, the HarbourView Inn is perfect. The small hotel provides great service and historic (but very modern) comfortable rooms. The HarbourView Inn is located right next to Charleston's Waterfront Park, overlooking the Charleston Harbor and the USS Yorktown on the other side. It's also just around the block from dozens of great restaurants and shops.
The HarbourView Inn is a AAA Four-Diamond property. Some rooms have private balconies, working fireplaces, whirlpool tubs. The lobby on the hotel's second floor has a cozy sitting area with a great view of Waterfront Park's large pineapple fountain.
The hotel is also just a few blocks away from the Old City Market, where vendors sell handmade items during the day.
The hotel has a small, but nice, rooftop terrace. Guest can choose to have breakfast delivered to the terrace for a nice way to start the day, or they can unwind on the outdoor couches at night and look at the stars. If you're lucky, in the morning, you may catch the sun rising over Charleston Harbor and Fort Sumter.
There is no self-parking. Valet parking is available for $20/night.
Turn down service is provided. Rooms have irons and ironing boards, hairdryers, robes, and more. The rooms also have nice, large LCD televisions, refrigerators, and safes.
The HarbourView Inn has a range of room types available, from standard rooms all the up to a Suite. Some rooms have nice views of the Charleston Harbor. I stayed in the hotel's historic wing, which features rooms with two queens or a king bed and 14-foot ceilings. The historic wing rooms have a large, brick wall at the far end, dating back to the 1830s. The bathroom was large and nicely done.
I particularly liked the Termpur-Pedic mattress in my room (most, but not all rooms have Termpur-Pedic mattresses). Although I haven't sprung for one at home, it really did give me a good night's sleep. I also found the rooms particularly quiet and well isolated.
The Business Traveler View
Charleston has a lot of hotel options for business travelers. But the HarbourView Inn stands out for its classic, elegant ambiance, modern amenities, personalized service, and overall cozy feel. I definitely felt like I was coming home after long day out in the city when I returned to the HarbourView Inn.
Food and Drinks
While the hotel doesn't have its own restaurant (don't worry—there are plenty of really good ones right around the corner), it does provide a range of snacks and beverages throughout the day, starting with a free breakfast.
Guests have a variety of options for breakfast. The hotel offers free room service (or delivery to the rooftop terrace or Atrium Lobby. Guest simply fill out a card with their breakfast choices checked off, and the meal shows up automatically at the time selected. In addition, pastries and coffee and teas are available in the Atrium Lobby (near the main lobby). Coffee is available all day.
Later in the day, snacks and flavored iced teas are served in the lobby. There's also a short wine and cheese reception in the late afternoon in the Atrium Lobby. And last, but not least, there's free milk and cookies in the evening.
Business Traveler Options
There's also a computer terminal in the lobby for easy access to email or the Internet, but there's no formal business center like you'd find in a larger hotel. However, there's free Wi-Fi throughout the hotel, so business travelers can easily work from their rooms.
Sometimes business travelers want to get out to exercise, so if you're looking to stretch your legs or exercise, simply walk across the street to Waterfront Park. From a long boardwalk you can watch cruise ships depart from the nearby port, or you can take a stroll down along the waterfront Battery area, with its historic (and colorful) homes.
Business travelers will appreciate the hotel's participation in the Stash Rewards program (also used by many other boutique hotels). Stash guests accumulate points based on dollars spent, usable on future stays.
Laundry service is available Monday through Saturday.
Meeting Rooms and Business Events
The HarbourView Inn does have executive meeting facilities, located just next door to the main entrance of the hotel. The conference and reception room holds up to 30 people, with over 540 square feet of space. The room has wired and wireless Internet.
In addition, the hotel can provide audio/visual services as well as refreshment options (although meeting planners can bring in outside caterers for their events).
The hotel also has an arrangement with nearby Harbour Club, which offers six different spaces for meetings and events, from dining rooms to rooftop terraces.
