Amtrak Train Service

From Greig Waddell, for About.com

Company Overview:
Amtrak, also known as The National Railroad Passenger Corporation, is a government-owned corporation. Amtrak operates national rail service, traveling to more than 500 destinations in 46 states. The company also offers a rewards program, Amtrak Guest Rewards.
Routes/Cities Served:
Though operating in nearly every state, Amtrak's most popular trains are those in the Northeast Corridor, servicing the cities of Boston, New York City, Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington, D.C. (and communities between). Outside of the Northeast Corridor, regional trains operating in California are the second-most heavily traveled. To find an Amtrak route, visit Amtrak.com.
Baggage Policies:
There are less restrictive baggage policies for train travel than air travel, but travelers should be prepared to lug bags up and down flights of stairs and throughout terminals (not to mention dealing with them on the trains, themselves). For the most part, passengers can take two carry-on bags onto each train, and checked luggage is available on limited routes/trains. See the full baggage policies online at Amtrak.com
Rewards Program:
Amtrak Guest Rewards is a free rewards program that lets members earn points for train travel, purchases through the more than 170 program partners, and through purchases made with the Amtrak Guest Rewards MasterCard. Earned points can be redeemed for free Amtrak travel as well as for hotel and car rentals, airline miles, rail certificates, cruises, and other retail certificates. Enroll in Guest Rewards online at Amtrak.com.
Reservations/Customer Service:
Book reservations online at Amtrak.com or call 1-800-USA-RAIL (1-800-872-7245).
