Northwest Airlines

From Greig Waddell, for About.com

Company Overview:
Northwest Airlines is a wholly owned subsidiary of Delta Airlines. During the merger process, Northwest will continue to operate flights as an independent carrier. Part of the SkyTeam Alliance, Northwest also offers its own rewards program, WorldPerks. Prior to the merger, Northwest Airlines was the largest U.S. airline carrier in terms of passengers flown. For more information on the merger, visit the Northwest Merger FAQ page.
Destinations:
Northwest Airlines and its travel partners fly to more than 1000 cities in 160 countries. Currently, Northwest maintains hubs and focus cities in the following markets:

Hubs:

  • Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport
  • Memphis International Airport
  • Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport
  • Amsterdam Airport Schiphol
  • Tokyo Narita International Airport
Focus Cities:

Baggage Policies:
Customers will be charged $15 for the first checked bag on all domestic flights purchased after November 12, 2008 and $25 for an additional bag. Any additional bags after two will incur substantially higher fees. Fees are waived for WorldPerks Elite and SkyMiles Medallion members.

For more baggage fees/restrictions, visit the Northwest website.

Rewards Program:
Northwest Airlines offers WorldPerks members the ability to earn miles for flights booked on Northwest, as well as through SkyTeam and other WorldPerks Airline Partners. Additional earning opportunities exist with Mileage Partners including car, hotel, online retail vendors and credit card partners.

To align with Delta's fee structure, NWA instituted new reward redemption fees on January 15, 2009. WorldPerks Platinum Elite members and travelers booking more than 21 days in advance of travel are exempt from these fees, which range from $75 to $150 per ticket.
