Well, Apple certainly isn't known for being humble. But when a major product release (so far it's sold more then 3 million of its iPhone 4 phones) has an antenna glitch that turns into a major media problem, you've got to be willing to address it.
That's what Apple's CEO, Steven Jobs, did today in a news conference in Cupertino, California. Although he wasn't exactly humble. According to the New York Times, he said the recent reports of antenna problems have "been blown so out of proportion it's incredible."
According to reports (including Consumer Reports) the new iPhone 4 phones drop calls or lose signal strength when users hold them in a way that interferes with the new, wrap-around antenna that encircles the body of the phone. Business travelers, probably more than anyone else, care a lot about not dropping calls. It's bad enough when buildings and tunnels make you lose an important client call. It's another thing when the phone itself is the cause. That's why today's admission and offer by Apple is clearly a step in the right direction.
However, Jobs and Apple are willing to concede that there are issues, and as a result are now offering free cases to anyone who purchases a new iPhone 4 before September 30, 2010. The cases eliminate the problem. Customers who previously purchased a case will be refunded their money. Apple is also offering to a full refund to anyone who's not satisfied with the phone.
