Clear-Air Turbulence Injures Passengers

From Greig Waddell, About.com Guide   August 4, 2009

I always keep my seat belt fastened on airplanes, but yesterday's turbulence scare on Continental (which injured 26 people, some seriously), was another reminder of why it should really be mandatory to keep your seat belt fastened. According to the news report I watched on NBC last evening, pilots often use cloud cover to alert them to impending turbulence. Sometimes, however, pockets of air collide, which may result in something called "clear-air turbulence." Call it whatever you want, just buckle up!
